Songs

Great Big World – I wrote this after watching an Olympic ice skater fall while competing for a gold medal.  My first thought was, how tragic that all the training and sacrifice came down to this moment – defeat.  Then almost immediately, I was amazed how she got back up and finished her routine with a smile on her face.  And she began training for her next performance.  Don’t give up!  It’s a Great Big World!!

Superstar – I wrote this song as if I was dreaming.  “Don’t wake me now…”  I keep hitting the snooze alarm to keep the dream alive.  Tour buses.  Photo shoots.  Record promotors.  And me pulling the chains on a white tiger (a big white cat).  Made me feel like I was in a scene from Zoolander.

Remember the Songs – whenever a songwriter says their songs aren’t autobiographical, they are usually lying to hide their truth.  I wrote this for a country singer named Michael Peterson.  He didn’t want it, so I took it back.

Shell – a great example of when a song is not autobiographical, but eventually comes true on its own.  Another song written from a dream-like, cinematic experience.

Blind Leading the Lame – I wrote this after a someone I was close to – who was married – ran away with another man. I often like twisting popular phrases. I always thought the blind leading the blind made sense. The blind leading the lame is insane. “Like the blind leading the lame. Feeling insane. I’m telling’ ya plain.” Also, one of my favorite lines I’ve ever written – “the pig and cow go do-si-do… they go… like the blind leading the lame…” I could see a cartoon pig and cow on their hind quarters with their square dancing. It’s funny to me, anyway…

Angel Wings – I felt like a friend’s kindness to me during a dark time was like the breeze of an Angel flying through my life and bringing me solace for a season.

Move On – another one I wrote as if I were watching my life play on a tv screen. Also one that wasn’t autobiographical until it later became so. I wanted to rhyme the whole song with “dead” for some reason…

Who Do You Think I’m Foolin’ – You ever think animals look at you like they know your whole life and they don’t approve? I grew up on Birchwood Avenue and there were lots of crows. In this one I am arguing with a crow that he doesn’t really know me. Or does he? Hey! Come back here!!

Music & Lyrics, Vocals, Guitars, Percussion: David Simpson | Keys, Bass, Guitars: Roby Duke
Sometimes – written about two dear women in my life who deserved love, but always wound up with the jerks. Sometimes love stays far from the lonely – far from their pleas. But sometimes, love comes…

The Outside – Living in a fantasy is suffocating. Living in reality – although not always easy – makes it easier to breathe the fresh air of promise. I believe I believe I believe…
